Before he explored the Nile, Samuel Baker founded a farming settlement at Nuwara Eliya and spent eight years in the Ceylon highlands. This is his account of the island in the 1840s and 1850s: the hill country, the coffee planters, the Veddas, the wildlife, and the colonial economy seen by a restless and opinionated man.
