The travel record of the Chinese monk Faxian, who walked from China to India around the year 400 in search of Buddhist scriptures and spent two years in Ceylon on the way home. His chapters on Anuradhapura, the Tooth Relic procession and the great monasteries are the oldest eyewitness description of Buddhist Sri Lanka. Translated by James Legge.
