The first forty Jataka stories in English, with the Nidanakatha, the traditional account of the Buddha's life that opens the Jataka collection. Rhys Davids, who served in the Ceylon Civil Service and later founded the Pali Text Society, adds a long introduction on how these stories travelled into the fables of Europe.
